BLOG POST: How to Get the Wrinkles Out of a Folded Vinyl Banner

A vinyl banner is a versatile, eye-catching way to promote events, businesses, and causes in San Francisco. But if it’s been stored folded, creases can appear. Fortunately, with a few easy steps, you can restore your banner to a smooth, professional finish.

1. Warm the Banner (Safely)

  • Sunlight Method: On a warm day in San Francisco, lay your banner flat outdoors. Let the natural warmth loosen the vinyl for a few hours.
  • Indoor Heat: Lay it flat in a heated room near (but not directly next to) a space heater to avoid overheating or melting.

2. Controlled Heat Tools

  • Use a hair dryer or heat gun on low heat, keeping it 6–12 inches away.
  • Sweep heat evenly over wrinkled spots while gently smoothing with your hand or a soft cloth.
  • Avoid holding the heat in one place to prevent damage.

3. Hang for Natural Stretching

  • Hang your banner taut with grommets, clips, or heavy-duty tape.
  • Leave it hanging for one or two days; gravity will help ease out minor wrinkles.

Choosing the Right Outdoor Ink

UV Inks

  • Process: Ink cured instantly with UV light.
  • Pros: Highly durable, fade-resistant, vivid colors.
  • Cons: Less flexible; can crack if bent.
  • Best for: Rigid signage and certain banner types.

EcoSol Inks

  • Process: Solvent-based, penetrates material, dries via evaporation.
  • Pros: Flexible, ideal for vinyl, weather-resistant.
  • Cons: Requires curing time; less scratch-resistant than UV or Latex.
  • Best for: Banners, vehicle wraps, decals.

Latex Inks

  • Process: Water-based, cured with heat, eco-friendly.
  • Pros: Flexible, no VOCs, quick drying, safe for indoor/outdoor use.
  • Cons: Needs specialized printers.
  • Best for: Banners, wall murals, textiles.

At San Francisco Banner Printing, we create banners in all sizes, including very large ones that occasionally require folding for shipment. Folding isn’t ideal but can significantly reduce shipping costs for banners longer than 8 feet on the shortest side. Rolled banners are wrinkle-free but can be more expensive to ship.

If you want to avoid folding, please inform us early so we can schedule freight delivery. While freight is slower and pricier than air shipping, it ensures your banner arrives without folds. We recommend factoring in your timeline and cost preferences before finalizing your shipping method.
